This certainly doesn t imply the conclusion that increasing the number of lines of high-level language code always improves speed or reduces size. It does imply that regardless of the aesthetic appeal of writing something with the fewest lines of code, there s no predictable relationship between the number of lines of code in a high-level language and a program s ultimate size and speed.

You can perform many essential tasks related to administering and managing a DNS infrastructure through the properties dialog boxes of your network s hosted zones. These tasks include configuring and managing zone transfers, enabling dynamic updates, and modifying zone types.

Certain operations are probably faster or smaller than others false! There s no room for probably when you re talking about performance. You must always measure performance to know whether your changes helped or hurt your program. The rules of the game change every time you change languages, compilers, versions of compilers, libraries, versions of libraries, processor, amount of memory on the machine, color of shirt you re wearing and so. (These are all serious except the last one.) What was true on one machine with one set of tools can easily be false on another machine with a different set of tools.

A. Microsoft supports only standard protocols that have been proven to interoperate. Windows XP and Windows 2000 Professional include an integrated VPN client. Windows Server 2003 and Windows 2000 Server include an integrated VPN server (also known as a VPN gateway). For remote access VPNs, Windows includes support for the Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) (RFC 2637) and the Layer Two Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) (RFC 2661, a Proposed Standard) that are secured using Internet Protocol Security (IPSec) (RFCs 2401-2409, Proposed Standards) with IPSec Encapsulating Security Payload (ESP) in transport mode. The integration between L2TP and IPSec is described in RFC 3193 (Proposed Standard). Both the client and server implementations use industry-standard methods for IPSec trust (X.509 certificates) and industry-standard user authentication, including the Challenge-Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP) (RFC 1994, Proposed Standard), the Microsoft Challenge-Handshake Authentication Protocol version 2 (MS-CHAP v2) (RFC 2759), and the Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP) (RFC 2284, Proposed Standard). For site-to-site VPN connections, Windows Server 2003 and Windows 2000 Server support PPTP, L2TP/IPSec, and IPSec TM. All the protocols supported have been demonstrated to provide sufficient multivendor interoperability.

The primary means to configure zone settings is through the zone properties dialog box, which is accessible through the DNS console. Each properties dialog box for a standard zone has five tabs: General, Start Of Authority (SOA), Name Servers, WINS, and Zone Transfers. Properties dialog boxes for Active Directory integrated zones include a sixth tab, Security, that allows you to configure access permissions for the zone. To open a properties dialog box for a particular zone, right-click the node of the zone you want to configure in the DNS console, and then select Properties, as shown in Figure 5-13.

This phenomenon suggests several reasons not to improve performance by code tuning. If you want your program to be portable, techniques that improve performance in one environment can degrade it in others. If you change compilers or upgrade, the new compiler might automatically optimize code the way you were hand-tuning it, and your work will have been wasted. Even worse, your code tuning might defeat more powerful compiler optimizations that have been designed to work with straightforward code. When you tune code, you re implicitly signing up to reprofile each optimization every time you change your compiler brand, compiler version, library version, and so. If you don t reprofile, an optimization that improves performance under one version of a compiler or library might well degrade performance when you change the build environment.
